"All music derives from blues and gospel," Taylor once said. "When you seek a higher power, that gives you the gospel. When you want to share your experience so that you can move on and go on, that's the blues. It doesn't have to be depressing. It's life itself." more »

Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story at 22:00pm, Tuesday 30th December, 2008 Hot Docs - The story of Stax Records began in the late 1950s when Mr Stewart, a white bank teller, and his sister Estelle Axton took over an old movie theatre in a Memphis neighbourhood, with plans to use it as a studio for recording country music. At a time when the local pool chose to shut down rather than abide by an order to allow blacks and whites to swim together, Stax Records completely ignored segregation. It was this complete commitment to talent which saw Stax launch the careers of unknowns, who went on to record international chart-topping hits such as "Soul Man," "Dock of the Bay," "Green Onions," "Midnight Hour," and "Respect Yourself". With artists such as Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Luther Ingram, Albert King, the Bar-Kays, Booker T. & the MG's, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus and Carla Thomas signed to the label - Stax grew to become one of the most important music recording studios in the world. LONDON — Miriam Makeba, a South African singer whose voice stirred hopes of freedom among millions in her own country though her music was formally banned by the apartheid authorities she struggled against, died early Monday after performing at a concert in Italy. "Saturday Oct 13, we were honoured to attend rehearsals of both the Heavenly King Juniors and the Douglas Singers who work together. This mob don’t just go through the motions when rehearsing, it’s not just about the dots, it’s an opportunity to worship once again, and they sing with as much intensity and committment to 13 visitors as if they were singing to a full house. These guys can sing. " - Tony Backhouse more »Friday, April 18
